I give because since I have been at the OSU Foundation I have seen the very real need that exists for private gifts. A friend of mine, who ended up making a major gift, once said to me, “OSU doesn’t need my money.” I thought at the time that couldn’t be true. Now I know it isn’t true!
I have seen what a difference a college education can make in how young people view their expectations. Education is the single most valuable investment a person can make for their own personal and economic future, and I know how hard many students have to work to keep making this investment and stay in school. I also understand why tuition has to be raised because state and private funding is not enough to keep pace with the increasing costs of running a quality institution.
Witnessing the deep and long-term impact that donor gifts can make made me realize that my gifts, no matter how small, can matter! If there are many other people who give faithfully every year, year in and year out, this will have an impact on an institution both in providing a steady source of financial support and in keeping alumni “Loyal and True!” The power of many modest gifts given regularly, can be strong just as one very large gift! It is so inspiring to see a gift history begin right after graduation with a gift of $5 or $10, and continue each year for decades, increasing as economic situations change. It is not especially the size that is notable, it is the connection and continuity of the donor. This is the Cowboy Faithful! I decided I wanted to be counted as one of the faithful!
