Supplying the Demand

Tourism drives economic engines domestically and internationally while providing an important service for travelers worldwide. And few people on the planet understand it better than Dr. Hailin Qu.

The OSU Regents Professor and William E. Davis Distinguished Chair in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration is recognized as one of the foremost educators and researchers in tourism and hospitality management. He was ranked the 15th leading researcher in publishing at three top-tier hospitality and tourism journals in the world by Tourism Management.

Consumers typically are mindful of service quality and delivery during travel, hotel stays and restaurant patronages only when it is satisfactory, but it is a science for Qu, who specializes in tracking the highs and lows of the hospitality industry. He has taught and conducted research at leading hospitality and tourism schools in Asia, Europe and North America.

The impact of his expertise is significant to the state of Oklahoma. Qu’s many research studies for the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation have created opportunities for OSU graduate students not only to help assess the state’s image as a travel destination for in-state and out-of-state domestic travelers and international travelers, but also provide input on advertising and marketing campaigns to improve the image of Oklahoma.

Through his and other HRAD faculty members’ efforts, the School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration in the College of Human Environmental Sciences was recently recognized as the eighth-best program in the country by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Education.

“Employers perceive our students are ready when they graduate to work in a hotel and restaurant and they have good professional attitudes,” Qu said. “Every Ph.D. graduate from our school secures very good academic positions nationally and internationally.”

Thanks to Branding Success, Dr. Qu and HRAD are receiving even more resources to prepare the students who will lead the hospitality industry in the future.
