Young OSU Alumni Find Ways to Give Back Despite Poor Economy

Less than 10 years after graduating from Oklahoma State University, Yancy and Christina Wright have decided to give back to OSU’s agricultural college with an estate gift to be received through their will.

At ages 30 and 26, Yancy and Christina are thinking about estate planning earlier than most of their peers, but the Wrights said it’s only logical to plan for the future. Those plans include naming the OSU Foundation as beneficiary to 50 percent of their estate after providing for family.

“In rough economic times, when people are losing their jobs and we see their struggles, we want even more to do what we can to help those around us,” the Wrights said. “We can’t establish an endowed scholarship right now, but we are able to include OSU in our will.”

Although Yancy and Christina now live in Iowa, they said they will never forget the life-changing impact of their OSU education. The Oklahoma natives received scholarships while attending OSU and recognize the value of philanthropy and how a gift today can change a student’s future.

Yancy and Christina Wright's estate gift will benefit the OSU agricultural college, providing for its greatest needs.

Because both Yancy and Christina graduated from OSU’s College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Recourses, the couple’s estate gift will be designated as an unrestricted gift to CASNR, allowing the college to use the funds toward its greatest needs.

“Who knows what (the college’s) needs will be in 70 years?” Christina said. “We don’t know that, but we do know that the people at OSU will know what’s in the best interest of the University and we’re putting our trust in them.”

Eventually the Wrights hope to be able to endow a scholarship for OSU students, but until then, they’ll continue to support the University.

“We will always do what we can to give back at every stage of our lives,” said the Wrights.

The OSU Foundation serves as the private fundraising organization for OSU, as designated by the OSU Regents. Its mission is to unite donor and university passions and priorities to achieve excellence.

Oklahoma’s only university with a statewide presence, Oklahoma State University is a five-campus, public land-grant educational system that improves the lives of people in Oklahoma, the nation, and the world through integrated, high-quality teaching, research and outreach.  OSU has more than 32,000 students across its system and nearly 21,000 on its Stillwater campus; with students from all 50 states and around 110 nations.  Established in 1890, OSU has graduated more than 200,000 students who have made a lasting impact on Oklahoma and the world.
