PSO Makes $10,000 Scholarship Contribution to OSU Institute of Technology

Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO), a subsidiary of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP), donated $10,000 in scholarship funds to Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology in support of the university’s new Power Plant Technology Associate in Applied Science degree program.  PSO representatives presented the check to OSU Institute of Technology’s president Bob Klabenes and Engineering Technologies Division Chair Mike Taylor on the school’s campus recently.

Taylor says he’s grateful for the support.  “We applaud American Electric Power for recognizing the importance of investing in the emerging workforce.  These funds not only impact the students who will receive them, but also will send a clear message to potential students that the Power Plant industry values students’ commitment to attaining their educational goals.”

The Power Plant Technology Associate in Applied Science degree program was created at OSU Institute of Technology in response to requests from utility companies to help rebuild their declining workforce.

“The ever increasing need for highly trained and technical people to staff our power plants requires, in some cases, more education than we have historically looked for,” says Gary Knight, vice president of the Generating Assets department at PSO. “The Power Plant Technology program is an excellent example of the kinds of things we are encouraging as strategies for meeting this burgeoning need.”

The program recruits and encourages students who show potential in the field.  Along with AEP-PSO, other companies supporting the program include: Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, OG&E Electric Services, Green Country Energy, LLC; and Luminant (formerly TXU).

OSU Institute of Technology’s Power Plant Technology Associate in Applied Science degree program began last September.
