Local Artist Exhibits Watercolor Paintings at OSU Foundation Gallery
Malinda Berry Fischer Gallery to showcase Beverley H. Hanes’ paintings through September

Beverley H. Hanes will showcase her unique style through a series of watercolor paintings in the OSU Foundation’s gallery now through September.
The opening reception for Hanes’ “Bright, Bold Watercolor, 2008” exhibit is July 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Malinda Berry Fischer Gallery. The opening is free and open to the public.
“This exhibit is a showing of every aspect of the way I paint,” Hanes said. “I tried to give a variety of every style that is uniquely my own.”
Hanes uses many types of media when painting, including watercolor, opaque gouache, fluid acrylic and watercolor ink, which she uses for her ice paintings. She says these media have allowed her to continue exploring and experimenting with ideas.
Hanes has been painting for more than 50 years. She studied in Europe and San Francisco, where she was a student at the DeYoung Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, before returning to Stillwater to study at OSU.
“My first award in art was when I was a freshman at OSU,” Hanes said. “Richard Bivens was in charge of the senior show that year and he said, ‘Beverley, I’ve got permission for your drawing to be in the senior show.’

“I’ll never forget that. I still have that little picture, and I love it dearly.”
Hanes, a Stillwater native, displays her work at Art Bin Frameworks, her own gallery and framing company in downtown Stillwater.
She said painting is not only a beautiful way to express herself, but it also allows her to create something and share it with others.
“The most proud thing is when you discover, all of the sudden, that you have people who love your work so well that they come up to see what new paintings you’ve created,” Hanes said.
Hanes is a national watercolorist and a member of the Oklahoma Watercolor Association. Over the years, she has received many awards, including “Best of Show” from the National Watercolor Association.
“When I first became a professional painter, I wasn’t sure if I could sell my paintings because I wasn’t sure if I could ever paint something that beautiful again,” Hanes said. “Now I realize that paintings are only mine while I’m painting them because the fact is: I paint for others.”
Named in honor of the Foundation’s former board chairman, the Malinda Berry Fischer Gallery showcases Oklahoma and OSU artists. The gallery serves to strengthen the connection between Oklahoma State University and the OSU Foundation. The gallery is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Oklahoma State University Foundation serves as the private fundraising organization for OSU, as designated by the OSU Regents. Its mission is to unite donor and university passions and priorities to achieve excellence.
